Other CCM - Clews Competition Machines description

Absolutely beautiful, untouched, unmodified (from it's post-race condition - other than plastics), exceptionally well-preserved piece of motocross history. George Erl of Up-Tite Racing told me he built this bike for either Donny Schmitt (definitely Google him - it's a heartbreaker) in 1995 or Gordon Ward in 1996 to compete in the 4-Stroke Nationals. Donny won in 1995 and I believe it's that bike. George thinks there's a possibility it could also be the 1996 bike, but with a VIN so low (003), I think it's Donny's bike. And the vintage European dirt bike collector I bought it from in Valencia, CA some years back confirmed it was Donny's bike. Talk about a piece of motocross history with exceptional provenance.

This was the bike that led CCM's (Clews Competition Machines) re-entry into the North American market. They hadn't been here since the 1970's (under their own name) when Martin Horn of Aero/PA in Illinois imported their BSA B50 based machines for Alan Clews. Vic Eastwood and John Banks (Google them as well) raced them here. Those bikes now sell for near $20k at auction when you are fortunate enough to find a collector willing to part with one. Armstrong-CCM also built about 4000 bikes for CanAm/Bombardier from 1983 - 1987 under Alan Clews leadership before he bought his company back from the Armstrong conglomerate. They remained a Europe-only marque until they came back to North America in 1995. I think of CCM as the ATK of England (a small, boutique company with a revolutionary impact on their industry).

And like ATK's, they were only built with the best parts.

Here are some of the Up-Tite Racing mods and other goodies I've noticed on this one...

* Carbon-fiber air intakes on both sides of the filter box (see pics)
* Up-Tite Racing custom silencer (with Up-Tite Racing plaque #5 stamped on it)
Up-Tite Racing custom header pipe
* Machined down cooling fins on right side
* Electric starter/battery removed (can be re-installed)
* High Performance cam custom-machined by George Erl (more potent than an 860 cam)
* Brand new Dunlops front and rear (with nubs still on them)
* Morad aluminum rims
* Brembo brakes front and rear
* Paoli front forks
* White Power rear shock
* Magura levers

Obviously weight reduction was a top priority when George was building this bike. And I'm sure it has tons of other mods I'm unaware of. Please look very closely at all my pics.

As a collectors bike and piece of motocross history, it hasn't been started in years. I've never even tried since I've owned it. Fluids were drained for storage. But it does have great compression. I think it's too perfect to restore (probably hasn't been ridden since it's racing days). I believe it should be maintained as a Preservation Class machine. Bikes like this can be restored over and over but they are only original once. And it will only increase in value.

Me personally, I just like to look at it. I think it should be considered as art in a living room or museum. But I'm thinning my collection down to vintage, blue frame, Cal-Fab swing arm, Horst Leitner designed, Rotax and Honda powered ATK's only. This is the last of my non-ATK bikes. And since it was built for closed-course racing and never titled, it is being sold with a bill of sale only.

My name is Chris and I am happy to answer your questions. Please call me at 435-669-1470. I also have many additional pics that show every nook and cranny. Send me an email address and I will get them out promptly. This beautiful piece of history is located in the dry, desert community of St. George, Utah (about 100 miles north of Las Vegas). Good luck and good bidding.

One last item... If you are new to eBay, have limited purchase/sales history, or have substantial negative feedback, please contact me before or shortly after you bid so I know you are legitimate. I mean no disrespect, but I've learned the hard way to check this stuff out. Thanks again for your interest.

Additional info below from a fellow CCM expert/enthusiast. Not 100% sure if it is correct, but it very well could be.

"Hi Chris. It looks like your bike is a 1996 C25. One of 49. It does appear to be race prepped, so it very well could have been a Sound of Thunder bike. The 003 VIN would have a "P" after it to show that it was a 1995 prototype that Donnie could have rode. All of the pictures I've found show that the stock C25's had white plastic and different silencers. The three 1995's all had purple plastic and Supertrapp megaphones, built to Donnie's specs,  like yours and mine. So maybe there were some bikes that were built for him, then raced by others after he died. When I asked CCM who rode for them after Donnie they said Liles and one other*."

* Probably Gordon Ward.
