Other Other description

Very rare 1925 Gnome Rhone motorcycle up for auction. This is a running motorcycle, and it has a clear Texas title. Gnome & Rhone was a French company best known for building and supplying aircraft engines in World War I. Once peace was established, they began to manufacturer motorcycles. This is a 1925 Model D. We believe that this is the first year for a model D. Here are some quick specs on the motorcycle.

Engine block 4 stroke (500 cc) side valve.
Bore: 84.5 mm Stroke: 88 mm.
Fiscal power: 5 hp.
AMAC carburettor.
Magneto ignition with variable advance.
Gearbox gear external latch 3.
Weight: 140 Kg
Speed of about 100 km / h.
Consumption: about 4.5 l/100 km.

At some point in time, this motorcycle was restored. We do not know when that happened, or who performed the restoration. It had been parked in a living room for 20+ years before coming to us. This bike runs, but is not road ready. It will start, but it’s definitely not running tip top. There is a video of it running below this description. This could be cleaned up for display purposes, or refreshed to make road and show ready.

There is very little information on these motorcycles available. From our research we think the following items are not correct for this year/model. There are not a lot of resources to go by, so these are speculations.

- Incorrect headlight and headlight mounting brackets. This is an electric head lamp. Most pictures of a 1925 model D show an acetylene powered head lamp, with acetylene tank mounted to the handlebars. This bike has been wired for a battery. The battery lead wires go to one of the saddle bags. Currently there is no battery installed on the motorcycle.

- There is an aftermarket foot shifter, made by Vitex, fitted to the gearbox. We think this motorcycle would have had a hand shifter from the factory.

That is really all we know about this motorcycle. Due to the lack of parts and information, we have decided to make it run and sell as is. This is an 88 year old motorcycle, there is no warranty.

We will ship this motorcycle worldwide (except to the countries listed on our exclusion list, please click the shipping tab above this description for more information). We can handle domestic shipments. International shipping arrangements will be the responsibility of the winning bidder. We can have this bike crated for export for around $475, beyond that the shipping arrangements are up to international bidders.

Please understand that we will want this bike picked up or shipped within three weeks from auction end. We ask that you make preparations promptly.
