Yamaha Other description
This is my 1982 Yamaha XZ550RJ Vision 550. Only made for a few years, this was Yamaha's answer to the Honda Hawk, a liquid-cooled twin with shaft drive.
This was my winter project, now complete. It had a salvage title, only because the original owner (now deceased) did not leave the original title where his estate could find it. When I bought it, it did not run, but after lots of work and $$$ it now does wonderfully. The engine is original to this vehicle. It was necessary to rebuild both carburetors using new and used parts I obtained through eBay and local purchases. Parts and materials used in the carburetor rebuild included new float bowl gaskets, check ball and weights, carb cleaning solutions, replacement: vacuum hoses, screws, fuel line and fuel filter. It was necessary to adjust the valve clearances on both the intake and exhaust valves. To do this, I obtained a valve compression tool from the "Riders of Vision" motorcycle forum. (Ridersofvision.net) I also purchased valve shims to complete the work. I purchased the following parts to complete the rebuild:
In addition, I replaced the factory bolts holding the starter clutch together with new, hardened steel units. A new gasket replaced the old side cover gasket. Note this is the original paint, seat, engine, transmission, etc. This is the original mileage for the bike. It runs and handles very well. It really likes curvy, hilly, back roads as it is light and agile. It does have one slight ding in the top of the fuel tank near the filler cap, almost unnoticeable. Otherwise, it is in very good original condition. I have the title in hand (shows rebuilt) and it is licensed in Ky as a historic vehicle. |

Video: Barry Sheene's 500 stroker on the Visordown stage
Mon, 30 Nov 2009We've got a real treat for you on the Visordown stage at the NEC Bike Show. It's the ridiculously gorgeous Akai Yamaha, ridden by Barry Sheene and now owned by Chris Wilson. Niall Mackenzie and Jamie Whitham fire it up 3 times a day, just before one of our feature shows.
The short but sweet life of the Yamaha R7
Tue, 17 Jan 2012I was reunited with an old friend recently, my 1999 Virgin Yamaha R7 Superbike. By the end of 1998 I had won three straight BSB titles with the Yamaha YZF750, when main sponsor Cadbury’s pulled out leaving zero funds for a title defence. Wanting desperately to ride the new R7 and thinking a replacement backer would instantly get on board I turned down quite a few offers including a juicy contract from Crescent Suzuki (Paul Denning always enjoys reminding me).
2014 World Supersport – Phillip Island Results
Mon, 24 Feb 2014The 2014 World Supersport season opened in dramatic fashion after a red-flagged restart turned the 18-lap race into a five-lap sprint, with MV Agusta making a triumphant return to the top of the podium for the first time since 1976. The Supersport event began with a hard-fought battle between three-time champion Kenan Sofuoglu, Kev Coghlan and Michael van der Mark. Sofuoglu and his Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R held a slim lead over Coghlan’s Yamaha R6 and van der Mark’s Honda CBR600RR when the race was halted after CIA Insurance Honda rider Jack Kennedy suffered an engine problem and leaked oil onto the track.
