A ready-to-ride example of the legendary Yamaha XT500 thumper. It's dependable and fast -- and feels light and nimble, almost like a 250. Manual decompression lever makes for easy, one-kick (two at the most!) starting.

Not  a show bike, but pretty darn nice for a 35-year-old machine. No major dents, scratches or rust.  All the electricals work, except the neutral indicator light.  Pumper-type carb gives instant throttle response.

The tank is the steel type from earlier model -- no big dents, and clean on the inside. The seat cover isn't original, but it's a high-quality upholstery job with no tears.

The local Yamaha dealer went through the engine about a year ago and replaced the cam, exhaust valve and rings (piston and crank were good). They also installed a kit to reroute/improve the oil supply to the head. This engine is strong and good to go -- it won't need any more work.

This is a great bike for riding gravel roads, or around town -- the trials-type tires work fine for both.  This bike is comfortable and user-friendly -- the seat height and center of gravity are low compared to modern on/off road bikes.

A real "blast from the past" -- you'll feel like a teenager again!

Yamaha Motor Europe asked three of the world’s top builders to work their magic on the company’s flagship power cruiser, the VMax. America’s Roland Sands, Germany’s Marcus Walz and Ludovic Lazareth of France each set to work and create three different interpretations on the Yamaha VMax. These “Hyper Modified” custom Yamaha VMax models were unveiled at Yamaha’s stand at the EICMA show earlier this month, and we placed them at #4 on our Top 10 EICMA Show Bikes You May Have Missed list.
