BMW Declares New January Sales Record

Tue, 07 Feb 2012

BMW announced global sales of 5,237 motorcycles in January, a new record for the first month and an 11.1% increase from the 4,714 units sold in January 2011.

The record month follows a banner year for BMW which sold a record 104,286 motorcycles in 2011.

“After a record year in 2011, the new year has started very pleasingly for BMW. Never before have we sold as many motorcycles in the first month of a year as in January 2012,” says Hendrik von Kuenheim, general director of BMW Motorrad.

Von Kuenheim predicts sales will maintain momentum through the year thanks to its new C600 Sport and C650GT maxi-scooters, the revised S1000RR sportbike and special edition R1200GS Rallye and G650GS Sertão. Expected to lead way once more is BMW’s top-selling R1200GS adventure tourer.

“Our fresh new model range continues to attract strong demand all over the world, and the incoming orders situation is positive, too,” says von Kuenheim. “With the market launch of the new maxi scooters C 600 Sport and C 650 GT this spring we are expanding our range to include the facet of ‘Urban Mobility’ and we anticipate additional growth impulse in 2012.”

BMW also announced positive news for its Husqvarna subsidiary. Husqvarna shipped 544 motorcycles in January, a 50.3% increase from last year’s total of 362 units. Husqvarna sales dropped significantly in 2011 but the company is looking to rebound in 2012 with the addition of its new Nuda 900 and Nuda 900R streetbikes joining Husky’s core off-road models.
